Golden rutile on specular hematite from Novo Horizonte, Bahia. Bright golden TiO² crystals with adamantine lustre against silvery hematite matrix....
Unique piece
Description
The municipality of Novo Horizonte in the state of Bahia is world-famous among mineral collectors for its extraordinary rutile specimens: bold, bright golden crystals of TiO₂ growing in acicular, elbow-twinned or sagenitic forms on lustrous silvery-grey hematite.
The combination is one of the most visually dramatic in the mineral kingdom — the adamantine sheen of the golden rutile contrasting brilliantly with the specular metallic hematite matrix. These specimens form in iron-rich metamorphic rocks and quartzites. Novo Horizonte rutile has been collected since the 1950s and remains the world reference locality for large, aesthetic rutile crystals.
